The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect explores concepts from chaos theory and weather modelling, where small changes in one system can lead to large effects in another. Reynolds references both our fragile world's climate vulnerability and the overwhelming flux at the heart of his recent works. Over three decades, Reynolds has established a reputation as a painter, drawer, worker with words, and installation artist. His practice evolved from large abstract colour fields to structural text-based imagery rich with literary, religious, art historical and architectural allusions. His paintings, drawings and prints utilise materials expressively, moving between sensuality and austerity. Ideas and imagery are overlaid or collected together in ways that create poetic rather than fixed associations. His work is suggestive and evades locked meaning, with the fluidity of the human mind. Reynolds has exhibited widely at major institutions including Auckland Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, and Sydney Biennale, and is a recipient of the Montana Lindauer Award and Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation of New Zealand.
