In Baller, Miranda Parkes extends painting into three dimensions with scrunched and billowed works featuring gold and copper leaf. Ice princess and feverdreamer are her first substantially gilded paintings compressed into three dimensions. The large open relationship (fresh) fills the back gallery—a gently heaving mass that balances breath with tumult, recycled from a 2015 installation at Tauranga Art Gallery. Baller and jostler see Parkes painting directly onto contoured commercial MDF pallets, engaging with industrial form through cavities and embedded miniatures. The diptych Tōtaranui captures high summer light through experiential abstraction. A suite of tabletop collages rearranges human form with delight, created by exploding plates from a book of Modern Painting. These paperworks feature details by Parkes' daughter Ollie, bringing intimacy and personal character to the exhibition.
