New Arrangements

Jonathan Smart Gallery presents New Arrangements by Ōtautahi Christchurch-based artist Steve Carr. The exhibition features five large-format framed photographs in the front gallery, alongside two bronze sculptures and a video work. The artist explores materiality, humour, and vastly different time scales through documentation in still and moving images paired with classical sculptural techniques of bronze casting. Forms of mundane and manufactured objects are combined with carefully placed supplements: explosions, pooling water, smoke, and urine. The work investigates variations in speed and slowness, the kinetic and the still, wrestling with brute materials whether monumental, preparatory, everyday, or temporary.
