‘After Us, the Flood’, sees David Charlie re-engage with his photographic archive spanning over two decades, which emerged from a period spent living and working on a farm in regional Western Australia. Being at a critical distance from the metropolis’ apotheosised cultural identity, conceived hedonistic fantasies abounded, playacted in antipodean distortion by Charlie and his peers. Here the archive is not returned to as fixed document, but annexed by painterly re-touching– a retrogression reworked, layered, and unsettled, allowing timelines to coalesce in compositions where nudes recur in moments where they are meeting themselves naked across time.

David Charlie (aka David Charles Colins) is an Australian multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans photography, video, painting, and performance. His work has exhibited extensively across Australia and internationally, including at the prestigious Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, France and through the Brighton Pavilion Residency, United Kingdom at the Freemantle Art Centre, WA. Charlie’s works are held in significant public collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House NSW, and the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Sydney College of the Arts.
