Immigrants often lose family members through wars, illnesses or migration. Janet Chan and Zorica Purlija present outcomes from their collaboration recreating portraits of deceased family members using AI software. By using images of close relatives, they recreated possible images of lost family members with no surviving records. The exhibition documents this process and reflects on how art can hold space for what no longer exists. Chan and Purlija used Loveart, recreate.ai, and Deep Dream Generator to generate images of a grandfather, father, and two sisters. The work acknowledges both the therapeutic value of reconnecting with lost loved ones and the risks inherent in relying on AI-generated representations.
