Liam Benson is a performance artist who documents his work through embroidery, photography, video and new media. His practice deconstructs social perceptions of gender, race, culture, sexuality and identity by cross-referencing art, popular culture and media language. Benson's work celebrates the evolution of social archetypes and explores possibilities within the cross-influence of socially entrenched identities and cultural and sub-cultural amalgamation. Working primarily with self-portraiture, his highly stylised aesthetic draws on the visual language of popular culture while maintaining formal clarity and complexity. His works are held in significant public and private collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Artbank, and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
