Wona Bae and Charlie Lawler create installations articulating connections between nature and the human condition. For this exhibition, they reimagine a serotinous seed-like form—referencing a botanical survival strategy where plants retain seeds until fire triggers their release. Mapped within the charred, spiked structure are climate data points from the Gosper's Mountain mega-fire that raged across Sydney's northern fringe for 79 days from late October 2019 to January 2020. The artists present the scale and positioning of the work as a deliberate tension with the gallery's flow, partially obstructing the entrance. Viewers must navigate physically and metaphorically around the installation, confronting Australia's black summer bushfires as a reminder of natural systems adapted over millennia in stark contrast to ongoing human-induced climate change.
