PIERMARQ* presents an exhibition of new work by UK-born, New York-based artist Xavier Baxter. Influenced by artists including Auerbach, Kiefer, Bram Bogart, Dubuffet, and Jenny Saville, Xavier employs unconventional materials and techniques—scrapers, palette knives, brushes, and his hands—to create gestural, expressive paintings. His figurative compositions draw from classical and contemporary art, referencing poses and interactions from old masters like Delacroix, Rubens, and Titian. Large-scale figures dominate his canvases, commanding the space with presence while remaining universally relatable. The artist emphasizes the materiality of paint itself, creating rhythmic compositions that invite viewers to discover new details with each viewing. His practice prioritizes emotional authenticity and the raw energy of the studio process.
