Chroma is an exhibition of monotype prints by Christchurch-based artist Zara Dolan. The process-based nature of monotype printing is central to Dolan's practice, where drawing on abstract expressionist gesture, mark making is direct and intuitive, mediated by the application of colour and the printing process. Mono prints produce one single image by applying ink onto a large perspex block, rolled through a printing press onto paper. This can involve several layers of colour blocking and mark making, creating immediacy, vigour and depth similar to painting, yet with distinct differences—the ink flows dynamically over perspex, and each print contains subtle changes of colour, mark and depth, bringing uniqueness to each work. Dolan's large-scale prints feature fluid lines, bold marks and brilliant colour informed by her earlier abstract paintings. Her style reflects abstract expressionism where process informs the work. Though composition is carefully planned in terms of measurement and form, bold, exuberant marks throughout the layers suggest intuitive flow of the body. Dense, saturated colour glimmers amidst black and white frameworks, creating layers of optical illusion and depth.
